The
art of lighting a firework fuse is not exactly a highly scientific
or complicated job. However, this work comes with many responsibilities
and expectations. The science is apparent in the execution of a series
of fuses timed perfectly, choreographed to beat, and set off in beautiful
tableaux of colour and effect. The complication comes when weather
conditions are wet, cold, windy, or a combination of the three. The
art is to be able to make the show happen under the worst of circumstances
This only comes with experience.
North Star's breadth of experience over 12 years
comes from its crews of pyro-technicians led, by company owners
Jeff Clarmo and Ken Leavoy. During the years every possible weather
condition, from 35 degree sweltering heat, at the Molson Fireworks
Competition in Quebec, to a frigid below 0 plus wind chill at Winterlude
in Ottawa, to constant rain all day, every day firing beside the
Horseshoe Falls at Niagara - we've seen and dealt with it all.
Our experiences have taken us on various barge shows, rooftop
locations and islands shoots. We have done shows with large caliber
shells on multi firing sites, to small intimate locations were
only a combination of mid and low level effects would safely and
effectively be used. We've done indoor fireworks and air show pyrotechnics,
electrically choreographed musical shows and hand fires. Our show
budgets range from $100,000 to shows costing $1,000 dollars.
The
end result of our work history, is a company that is able to deliver
a high quality show, even in the most diverse situations. However
there is a fine line between safety and the attitude that dictates
that the "show must go on!!". After all aspects have
been considered, the show sometimes can't go on. When the wind
is too high or threatening the crowd, the only choice is to postpone
the event, regardless of how disappointing it may be. This is a
choice that only comes with experience.
Being able to make the right choices, is why North
Star has been a fixture in so many communities for so many years.
Event organizers know that fireworks are one portion of their busy
agenda that they do not have to worry about, because Jeff and his
crews will get the job done.
